No river on Long Island has quite the history as the Peconic. At 15 miles-ish, the Peconic River is one of the island’s longest rivers and is the only river oriented west to east. Its history dates back millenia, from glaciers to riverflow, native and colonial use, dams, forges and mills constructed, and now its designation as a “scenic river” under the Wild, Scenic, and Recreational Rivers Act (NYDEC). The Peconic River is an east end story--the complicated relationship between people and place, use and protection, and also, a remarkable, enduring beauty.
