Geek Talks: Stop Picking on Jaws

  • übergeek 400 Hallett Avenue Riverhead, NY, 11901 United States (map)

A collaboration between Fish Guy Photos and übergeek Brewing Company, “Geek Talks” is a lecture series with a night of great beer, delicious food, and a wealth of knowledge shared by local naturalists, educators, and researchers.

“Stop Picking on Jaws! Fact vs. Fiction Regarding New York's Backyard Neighbors: Sharks”- Hans Walters is an Animal Department Supervisor at the Wildlife Conservation Society's New York Aquarium in Brooklyn. He also conducts field research on sharks with WCS' New York Seascape Program. His presentation provides an overview of the history of human perceptions of sharks that led to the creation of "Jaws", and the work scientists at WCS and elsewhere have done to debunk myths surrounding sharks and protect this group of earth's most charismatic and misunderstood predators. Along the way, you will learn some interesting historical connections between WCS in New York and the creation of the blockbuster novel and movie versions of "Jaws."

Festivities start at 700 pm, lecture starts at 800pm.
