“Applying Citizen Science to Increase Survival Rate of Cold Stunned Sea Turtles in Coastal New York” by Maxine Montello of the NY Marine Rescue Center- Come join us on November 11, 2021 for a chilly talk regarding the increase of cold stunned sea turtles stranding in New York by NYMRC’s Rescue Program Director Maxine Montello. Every winter, sea turtles strand throughout New York as a result of a climate-related cold snaps that typically occur quickly in the late fall and lead to cold stunning, a physiological temperature shock similar to hypothermia. Each year, NY beaches are patrolled for cold-stunned individuals by NYMRC staff, trained volunteers and members of the general public. Survival rate rests heavily on response and rescue time of these critical species. Patrolling efforts have increased over the years with the implementation of initiatives such as the Citizen Scientist training program on ongoing recruitment of volunteers. Attending this lecture will qualify you to help NYMRC patrol local beaches for these endangered species.

festivities start at 700 pm, lecture starts at 800pm.
